ktvu fox two. >> a second round of powerful storms sweeps across the bay area tonight. heavy rain and intense wind battering the coastline this christmas eve. >> a live look at the radar. we have seen thunderstorms sweeping through our region. warnings and advisories are in place as communities cope with power outages that could extend into christmas day. >> make a reservation like every year they do, but it's going to be sad to tell them that we cannot serve them. >> storms are expected to continue hitting the bay area

through the overnight hours. good evening. on this christmas eve. i'm greg lee. >> and i'm jana katsuyama. we are already seeing impacts tonight. thousands of people are without power. and caltrans closed two boards of the caldecott tunnel due to a storm related electrical emergency. we want to give you a live look at parts of the bay area that are seeing the biggest impacts. tonight. we have cameras in the north bay and the south bay. on your left is the santa cruz mountains off highway 17, and on your right there is san rafael in the north bay. both areas have been seeing rain all night as well as winds. >> we have team coverage for you tonight tracking these severe storms. erin dickins along the san mateo county coast for us. but first, let's go to meteorologist rosemary oroczo with the latest on the storms we're seeing all across our region. rosemary. >> yes, greg. the heavy rain, the strong winds whipping the bay area once again. let's take a look at this live camera i have of santa cruz. and you can see the rain. you can see the wind really blowing those flags, as well as the palm trees and blowing sand out there as well. now the flood watch continues

until friday night, as well as advisories now for wind high wind warning until tomorrow morning, 10 a.m. for the coastline as well as the delta region and the wind advisory for the rest of the bay area, also going until 10 a.m. with wind gusts expected to reach 55 to 65mph. and as we turn it over to storm tracker two, we do see light to steady heavy rain from areas over the north bay, as well as the east bay and lighter rain pockets of it, at least in the south bay at this time, but the wind already creating some damage as well. as we take a look here over areas of the north bay and the healdsburg area, 907 this morning or this afternoon, this evening, chp reporting full tree blocking the roadways there as we take a shift to the east bay in emeryville. we've got lanes number one and two flooded there along 980. and to the south bay, where a tree is down in the right lane there, highway 17, in the scotts valley area. the winds are gusting quite strongly across the bay area right now. sfo

reporting a wind gust to 46. and we are looking at winds in our hills. 62 atlas peak. we may see these actually increase as we get into the overnight hours. a better look at what we can expect moving forward into christmas day. coming up in just a little bit. >> all right. thank you rosemary. pkg crews have been working tonight to restore power to areas mostly along the coast that have been impacted by the storms. ktvu erin dickens spoke with some people who lost power. he joins us live now from el granada near the half moon bay airport. and, erin, what are you hearing from people there and pge? >> jenna, first of all, we're hearing a lot of wind, and you can hear it right now. i've been covering this storm for three days, and this is definitely the most windy i have seen it. right now we are at a staging area for pge. the workers and the equipment are here. take a look at the trees. you can see them blowing. the workers are here on standby in case there is an emergency. and they tell me it is really too

windy right now to even go up on a bucket to check or repair those power lines high up. now, officials say tonight's storm is stronger than last night's. and last night they say there was 100 mile an hour wind gusts. >> wind is the biggest factor when it comes to storms. we see debris flying through the air that can hit our lines. >> tamar sarkissian says the main cause of the power outages is the wind. pge has set up a staging area in this parking lot. sarkisian says one of their biggest challenges are trees blocking the roads in remote areas. >> that can slow things down a bit. we do have vegetation management teams ready to roll and remove those trees, but those trees have to be removed before we can actually get in. >> and along the coast, pge will have their hands full.

>> it just happened like ten minutes ago. >> we were there when the power went out at mezzaluna restaurant. christmas eve is their busiest night of the year. >> with 320 reservations. and now the power is off. it's unbelievable. >> the line was out the door, customers waiting for their tables. i spoke to the ones sitting down. how are you guys coping with the power outage. >> right now? >> what outage is it in? okay. >> rich was with his family. he was taking it in strides. >> we'll let you know in a half hour if we get any food. >> from el granada to the beach in pacifica. some people love this weather. and that is the surfers. there were dozens of them out here until the sun went down. do you like the waves today? >> yeah, but it's bigger. >> enemy was visiting from japan. she was expecting a

sunny california. >> it's all cloudy. >> and this couple just got married. they were taking pictures in the rain. >> this is our winter weather. it's happening. which is why we got the flashlights ready. because we're ready to lose power. >> but even if the power goes out, they still plan to celebrate each other and have a party on christmas eve. >> get the flashlights out and get some candles and. yeah, yeah. >> keep it going. >> yeah. >> and that's exactly what they were doing back at the restaurant. >> look, this is my granddaughter. >> oh, hi. >> customers said they are weathering this storm by spending time with family on this special holiday. >> this is this is like my family here. this is my family. i'll be honest with you. i'm not kidding you. >> how are you going to get through tonight for yourself? >> oh, i don't know. we try to navigate it, you know, it's it's not much we can do about

it. you know, it's where the power is off. it's off. >> yeah. so, jenna, all those people that i spoke with keeping a positive attitude tonight, you know, the restaurant, the power goes out here. and again, pg and e in the staging area. we're actually right along the coastline. they are ready to go out if there's an emergency, but we haven't heard anything as of yet. erin dickins, ktvu, fox two news. >> erin, thanks so much for that report. certainly safety a big factor there. here is a look at the pge outage map. more than 19,000 customers are without power. and you can see how the coast is hardest hit at last check. santa clara county has more than 9500 customers without power. the north bay more than 6500 customers in the dark. pge is opening a community resource center for christmas day at the russian river senior center. some areas might not get power back until after christmas. the storms are causing concern about trees falling. last night during the

severe weather, a giant 100 foot redwood tree fell onto a house, injuring a young girl who was inside and crushing three cars parked nearby. the owners of this home along highway 116 in guerneville, say debris fell into their three year old daughter's bedroom. she was taken to the hospital with a minor injury. sonoma county fire officials say they're concerned with the saturated ground that more trees could fall in this wave of storms. residents say they're worried about the winds causing more power outages and damage. >> but they started getting really destructive out here. they i mean, if it hits your car or something, put a big dent in it. take your windshield out. i've had i've had these things come through my roof all the way through my sheetrock in my house. so when it gets windy is when we really worry about it. >> in parts of the north bay that remain without power. pg and e says they are working on repairs. the sonoma county fire captain says they've increased staffing during the storms to handle all of the calls for service. >> in the sierra. this is a look at i-80 eastbound at donner summit earlier this evening, when traffic slowed to a crawl. around seven chp says

multiple spinouts and vehicle collisions forced them to stop traffic in both directions on and off through the night. at one point, semi trucks were being turned around, chp says tow trucks worked to reach dozens of stranded motorists. southern california is also bearing the brunt of this storm and expecting another round of heavy rain tomorrow. top of mind is flooding and mud flowing along the roads. first responders say they're particularly concerned about areas recovering from wildfires, like in altadena, in some foothill areas near the eaton fire burn scar, crews work to clear mud that's been filling the roads. l.a. county officials have issued evacuation warnings alerting residents to be prepared to leave at any time. >> we remain diligent and out there patrolling the city and are really concerned about our burn scar areas and the homes up there. >> meantime, in pasadena, you can see in this video, vehicles trudged through high water as the rain flooded some roads. several roadways across southern california have had to

close down due to that flooding. >> pg is now investigating a second substation fire that wiped out power in saratoga today. it comes just days after the substation fire that left nearly a third of san francisco in the dark. ktvu james torres has more from the south bay. >> along prospect road in san jose. no color coming from the stoplights as pge deals with another local blackout. >> we usually had a huddle before we see the patients. however, all of a sudden the power just all black. >> flora gregory put up this sign at the children's dentist's office where she works at eight this morning. the power went out. hours later, they had to make the calls. all appointments today are canceled. >> we're dealing with patients, so definitely it time is gold for them. i really feel sorry for our patients today. i just there's nothing that i can do except apologizing to them for the inconvenience. >> the same white paper messages for the next door nail salon and the chiropractor

office where ryan kenny hoped to make his appointment. >> i know we did have a pretty big storm last night. probably has a lot to do with it. >> you can see the dark aftermath of where a fire damaged a substation in saratoga. it started around 830 this morning. crews say the fire was small enough to extinguish itself, so firefighters didn't need to do much in parts of san jose, saratoga and campbell, about 21,000 customers lost power. >> we were able to quickly reduce those numbers by 7000 within the first hour, and by noon everyone was restored. >> the utility says. some piece of equipment failed at the substation, but they're not sure why until they figure that out. there's no telling how similar this incident is to that. in san francisco last weekend, where a fire at a substation shut off power for about 130,000 customers for about three days. >> in san francisco. we're trying to figure out what the root cause was. there was a

significant amount of damage at that substation, so it's going to take time. once we have both root causes, we'll be able to compare. >> people we talked to say they worry about these systems, hoping the next outage doesn't affect any holiday plans. >> a little bit concerning for sure. i know all california residents are a little bit on their toes with the pg and e thing that happened years ago. >> pg and e is offering bill credits to those customers affected in san francisco. i asked a spokesperson if they would offer those same credits to those customers affected here down in the south bay, and they tell me it's something they're considering reporting in saratoga. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> coming up, christmas eve events held across the bay area brought people together despite the weather. we'll show you how people are spending the holiday. >> and how does the gift of $1.7 billion sound the giant jackpot up for grabs in tonight's powerball drawing? we will show you the numbers.

every year, norad, the north american aerospace defense command, tracks santa's sleigh and his reindeer through the night on his journey from the north pole. right now, it appears that santa is making his way across the great state of texas. he is headed for kingsville, texas. after leaving san marcos, norad uses its satellite technology to update their map in real time. as santa rushes from home to home, he's already delivered nearly 7 billion gifts to children on his way to california. >> all right, well, bringing it back here to the bay area, despite the rain, people are out and about in the bay area on this christmas eve, some taking in a show or enjoying dinner at a local restaurant. others are giving back to those in need. ktvu john is live in union square with more on how people are spending the holiday. i don't see an umbrella, so it looks like it's dried out a little bit there.

$1.7 billion powerball jackpot, the winning numbers were four, 25, 31, 52, 59 and the powerball 19. tonight's jackpot was the fourth largest in powerball history. the take home total a whopping $781.3 million. we spoke with some players in san jose tonight to see how they would have spent their jackpot. >> it disappeared as quietly as possible, take care of friends and family and then, yeah, travel. >> i'd like to go see my sons and grandchildren and start there and then. who knows? >> now, the odds of scoring that winning ticket in arkansas tonight were less than 1 in 292,000,000. while the jackpot is gone, make sure you still check that ticket to see if you want any smaller prizes. >> all right, well, let's give you a look at some of the snow falling earlier today in south lake tahoe. plenty of flakes for the kids to play in with this christmas snow there though. rain here. we're going to bring rosemary oroczo back in for a check of your bay area

forecast. look at those flags behind you. >> oh my gosh, rain and wind. those winds are howling out there. the wind advisory and high wind warning went into place around 8:00 this evening, and the winds turned on right away, giving you a look there once again of santa cruz. can't imagine anybody being out there. but just in case it is something to be aware of, we do have a beach hazard that will continue into early friday morning for the entire coastline, including santa cruz. not a good time to be out there by the water. you are going to have blowing sand, almost had snow blowing sand over coastline as it is windy and it is rough in the sierra blowing snow. if you're traveling in that direction, there is a winter storm warning. let's talk about what's happening here. with the rain falling over the north bay, it is fairly widespread at this time. moderate rain and pockets of heavier rain over some spots. we've got concord, danville and some rain heading east towards

will travel this holiday season. that's why we give you this live look outside at sfo tonight. plenty of folks getting their last minute trips to their christmas destinations. millions of people are trying to navigate the holiday rush to get home. >> yes, and the number of travelers is expected to set records this year. fox's max gordon is at lax in los angeles, where people are traveling through that area and getting hit with some very severe weather. >> lots of travelers here at the airport this christmas eve as folks get off to their holiday destinations. and for many, the weather is tangling up these travel plans as an atmospheric river slams into the west coast. just getting to the airport has been a challenge for many today, with roads slick and flood alerts issued. drivers in southern california are being urged to rethink their christmas travel plans, with heavy rain expected through the holiday. the storm has caused flight delays at la area airports. delays are also mounting at other airports across the u.s. with winter weather hitting the midwest and east coast. meanwhile, triple a is anticipating 2025 year end

travel to set records. triple a projects 122.4 million americans will travel at least 50 miles from home over the 13 day period from december 20th to january 1st. the vast majority of travelers will make their journey by car, but triple a expects airports to be busy as well. and even though there are challenges, the travelers that we talked to today at lax are still filled with holiday cheer. >> we're going to be flying with santa and christmas eve. we're going to be excited. yeah. >> all the kids, you know, we'll be looking for the sleigh and everything. >> we're having a christmas vacation. it's about 40 of us. we're going to have lots of fun. >> tell me about your suitcase. this is really cool. >> it's a scooter. suitcase. i mean, i really like going fast on it to go fast. me to show you how to. >> yeah, show me how. show me how. all right. >> so where's everybody going? it might not be a surprise, but warm weather destinations are popular this time of year, and triple a says the top three domestic destinations are all

in florida. at los angeles international airport. max gordon, fox business. >> for people traveling for the holiday, it's important to be prepared. keep a close eye on the weather conditions before you head out. this is a live look now at 880 along the coliseum in oakland. you can see from the reflection of the headlights it is wet out there. and those slick roads. definitely something that you'll want to slow down and just take your time. be careful and get where you need to go. the chp holiday enforcement period is underway and officials officers rather have extra patrols out watching for people speeding impaired drivers and other lawbreakers. this campaign is designed to deter dangerous behavior on the road. during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. the enforcement period runs through tomorrow at midnight, the chp says. excessive speed is one of the top causes of vehicle crashes. >> you got more people on the roadway, more people are traveling, families are traveling. it's it's the holidays. so some people are

more troops and aircraft to the caribbean. >> this comes as the trump administration continues to ratchet up its pressure campaign on venezuela's leader, nicolas maduro. fox's alexandria hoff has the latest. >> from an oil tanker blockade to the massive military buildup in the caribbean. president trump is sending a clear message to venezuelan leader nicolas maduro. >> we have a massive armada formed, the biggest we've ever had. if he wants to do something, if he plays tough, it will be the last time he's ever able to play tough. >> now, the pentagon is reportedly adding to that force by deploying more troops and aircraft to the region from u.s. bases that are home to special operations units. >> this is a beautiful psychological chess move when you stage special operations forces as well as the 75th ranger regiment. you're screaming that violent options are on the the table. ultimately, this is part of

trump's big squeeze. >> since september, the pentagon has targeted suspected drug boats officials say are connected to the maduro regime and seized two oil tankers accused of illegally moving venezuelan oil, which is the country's main source of revenue. >> there's two things that are funding the venezuelan regime maduro's regime. it's obviously exporting oil. and obviously the narcotics. so if we start to squeeze him on both fronts, i think his days are numbered in venezuela. >> on tuesday, venezuela's parliament passed a bill criminalizing a range of activities that could interfere with commerce in the country, including blockades. but the move is unlikely to stop the u.s. from targeting other sanctioned oil tankers. president trump has not said what his next move will be, but he has not ruled out military action on the venezuelan mainland. in washington, alexandria, hoff, fox news. >> tonight, some mixed signals from israel about the trump administration's peace plan for gaza. this comes ahead of prime minister benjamin netanyahu's

upcoming trip to the white house. while the american led ceasefire in gaza is holding, we are hearing new comments from israel's defense minister, israel katz, about resettling northern gaza. this is drawing a strong response from the trump administration. >> we are in deep gaza and we will never leave gaza. we are there to defend, to prevent what happened. we are standing, as we said, we trust the rock of israel and the idf in defending israel in the fierce battle between jihadist enemies of this kind and israeli enemies of this kind. >> a white house official criticized those remarks in a statement to fox news. and shortly after defense minister katz walked back his position. >> at least two people are dead and 20 hurt after an explosion at a nursing home in pennsylvania. police believe a gas leak in the basement at the bristol health and rehab center may have caused the blast. it collapsed the first floor, trapping residents inside. utility crews were already at

the center investigating a reported gas odor when the explosion happened. a second explosion made rescues more chaotic. officials say a recent safety inspection found the center was not up to code. it also came under new ownership just a few weeks ago. >> the department of health, at the state level conducted a visit here on december 10th, and there was a plan put in place in order for this, these new facility owners to meet to upgrade the standards as at this facility. >> bristol township's fire chief believes all the nursing home residents are accounted for. >> a walnut creek family's home is destroyed this christmas eve after a fast moving fire tore through the structure. contra costa county fire crews responded to the south end of the city a little before 630 this morning to find part of the house fully engulfed in flames. officials say the fire quickly extended into other areas of the home, but a quick thinking family member was able

to alert the other people who were inside. >> we know it's in the garage right now and that's where our origin is. our investigators are behind me working on that. it's just an unfortunate thing. it's christmas eve and, you know, we have family. they had visitors in town, you know, for the holidays. and this is how they're going to start their christmas. so it's just a sad event. >> investigators are still trying to determine what caused that fire. meantime, over in richmond, a fire badly damaged a storage facility this morning. from skyfox, you can see the crews were pouring water onto the fire. it started at about 920 this morning at a storage facility near carlson boulevard and cutting boulevard. firefighters closed off streets in the area, but there was no shelter in place issued. no injuries have been reported, and so far there's no word on the cause of the fire. >> fairfield police are investigating a shooting that took place this afternoon. investigators say it happened on cottonwood drive near tabor avenue. the man who was shot arrived at north bay hospital just before 1 p.m. with a gunshot wound. he later died from his injuries. fairfield police say there is no

suspected threat to the community at this time, and they're asking anyone with information to contact them. two people are in critical condition after a small plane crashed north of sacramento this afternoon. it happened in rio linda. officials say the plane left rio linda airport around 1230 this afternoon. soon after takeoff, the plane went down, crashing into a large field west of the sacramento mcclellan airport. the plane is a 1966 fixed wing, single engine aircraft. no word on where it was headed. sacramento fire says the two men on the plane were a pilot and a passenger. the faa and ntsb will begin an investigation on the cause of the crash. >> we're learning about another shark attack, this time off the marin county coast. the press democrat reports that a surfer was in the water at dillon beach on monday morning, when a shark bit their surfboard. that surfer was not hurt. california fish and wildlife took a dna swab of the board with the hope of identifying the shark species. warning signs are now posted at that beach. another

this year as more and more americans, particularly young ones, are going to church. year over year sales of the good book are up 11% this year. that includes 2.4 million sold in september alone as part of a surge in the wake of the assassination of conservative activist charlie kirk. all told, more than 18 million bibles have been sold so far this year. and it's not just sales. people on the streets of new york tell us they have noticed a rise in church attendance, too. listen. >> i've seen a lot of younger people going to church, and to be honest, that really is refreshing to see. >> i have seen an uptick in it just on social media and stuff. there has been more of an interest amongst my age group. >> i feel like my kids in college are going to church every sunday. >> before covid, it was always an older crowd and now it seems like families are coming back to the church. >> 33% of u.s. adults say they attend a religious service in person, at least monthly.

rain, as well as the damaging winds, the severe thunderstorms expected and it could come during the overnight hours, sierra snow levels dropping down to about 4500ft, with 2 to 4ft of new snow expected in the sierra. if you're thinking about heading over there for the weekend, it looks much better and you'll have fresh powder to enjoy. storm tracker two here. big storm off our coastline and impacting much of the west from the pacific northwest all the way into the desert southwest. but california getting hit the hardest as we move in closer to the bay area once again. widespread scattered showers in the north bay. the east bay through the south bay as we get into the evening hours and overnight hours, another band expected to sweep through with the possibility of severe weather thunderstorms. here's a look at some of the wind gusts for the evening. hours earlier this morning, we had winds reaching 80 90mph. not going to see them quite this strong. at

least that's what the models are showing us. but the possibility of severe weather could actually be a little bit worse during the overnight hours coming tonight. atlas peak reporting a wind gust to 62mph. los gatos reporting a wind gusts to 65. most of these areas are in our hills. the futurecast model here looking at 1 a.m. this is the next round, bringing with it the severe weather, the thunderstorms. and we're even talking about the slight possibility of small tornadoes embedded within there. tomorrow morning we will wake up with just the scattered showers. here's a look at sunrise. getting a bit of a break, but we're not done. the pop-up showers will continue during the afternoon hours, and that's a look at 6:00 tomorrow night if you have dinner plans, if you're going to be out and about, this could shift. it could come in a little bit sooner, a little bit later. but the takeaway is we still have more to go even through christmas evening. and by friday, when this finally begins to move out, we will have anywhere from an inch to two inches over our south bay

all kid stuff now. >> i feel good. i feel like right now i'm as strong as i've been. i feel good physically. doesn't really feel like i even had leukemia. >> the 18 year old concord native was diagnosed back in january of 2021. only a seventh grader, he fought the good fight during the pandemic. for two and a half years, brady underwent 900 plus consecutive days of oral or iv chemotherapy and labored through weeks isolated in a hospital. >> i stayed positive, and i knew that. i knew that nothing could really stop me from doing what i wanted to. and even when i didn't feel good, my mom would walk around the hospital floor and we'd just see how many laps i could do going around. and i just trusted my doctors. i trust that they knew what they were doing. >> remission came in may of 2023, and months later, brady approached clayton valley head football coach nick terza.

>> you know, he came to me, it was his sophomore year and he, you know, wanted to play football. and i said, sure. and his mom kind of gave me some background of the story. and they wanted him to play quarterback. and you know, i said, you know, it's going to be a very hard position to play with, with something of the caliber that brady's gone through. maybe he can be a manager ball boy or something like that. and so he just got into kicking. >> three years later, brady is now a four star punter kicker for the eagles, and his journey has made quite the impression on his fellow teammates. >> there's no words that can describe what he had to go through, and there's no excuse for us not to push through, like just a two hour practice. while he had to fight for for years battling something so terrible. i love blocking for you. >> when he told us the things he had to go through, it was it was hard to hear. but knowing that, it makes me, you know, honestly want to push harder, you know, just for our teammates and him, you know. so

it was it's a huge inspiration. >> brady tackled cancer much like his kicking duties, simply by visualizing a positive outcome. >> you just have to be focused. you can't be focused on really anything else. like during our games, i'll be standing here by the kicking net, and i'll just be picturing every single play that's going on and when i'm going to need to go out on the field. and so before it even happens, i already knew, like what i was going to do, and i knew i was going to make the kick. >> all of brady's hard work has paid off. he's accepted a scholarship to punt and kick for minot state, a division two school in north dakota, come the fall. >> yeah, i honestly never thought i'd get a scholarship or anything. it was kind of just a big dream. i didn't know any coach was like, believe in me. but i put in the work and i'm going to keep putting in the work, make sure i get better.
